課程概述

Seminars 1-4 (/Seminars 1-6) support the research projects of master (/PhD) students. Through Seminars 1 and 2, students have already defined research questions and understood the relationship between different disciplines.

In Seminar 3 (/Seminars 3-5), master students (PhD students) identify methods, conduct their research, and obtain preliminary results.

In Seminar 4 (/Seminar 6), master students (/PhD students) must explain their main findings and explain their academic and social implications in their presentations and papers.

Master students taking Seminar 4 must pass their oral defense in the same semester. If students fail in their oral defense, they automatically fail in their Seminar 4.

PhD students taking Seminar 4 (/Seminar 6) must pass their qualification (/oral defense) in the same semester. If students fail in their qualification (/oral defense), they automatically fail in their Seminar 4 (/Seminar 6).

Students taking Seminar 4-6 (including master's and PhD programs), please ensure that your supervisor is able to attend, either in person or via online, during your presentation. Failure to do so will result in not passing the seminar lecture.

課程目標
This course comprises two stages. In these stages, you will improve your writing (Stage #1), and presentation skills (Stage #2).

In Stage #1, you write an abstract of your research in English. The abstract should be within 400 words. One instructor first explains the techniques to write a good abstract. You use the techniques and write your own abstract. Instructors and students read the abstract and give suggestions to improve the abstract.

In Stage #2, you present your research in English (15-minute talk and 5-minute Q&A). One instructor first explains the techniques to make a good presentation. You use the techniques and make a presentation. Instructors and students listen to the presentation and give suggestions to improve the presentation.

Through these two stages, you have improved your thinking, writing, and presentation skills. You must write the final report in English (5-10 pages excluding references). The report must include methodology and (preliminary) results, as well as the introduction.

Notably, your final report must be intelligible to non-experts in different academic and socio-cultural contexts. Such skills are essential for tackling environmental problems. Solutions for environmental problems often emerge from international and interdisciplinary collaboration. The IPCS thus wants to produce graduates who have such skills.
